Then and Now, 9 Year Review Of My Portrait Photography

The photography industry has changed so much since I started my journey as a professional photographer 9 years ago. ( The most notable is social media. Although Facebook was around, Instagram had not taken off. I can only imagine my classmates taking video during photo class and documenting all the good and “shouldn’t be seen” images we created together. Having a blog was the biggest outlet for us to document and share with the world. Today we can post an image and have worldwide reach instantly, be inspired by other photographers all around the world with a simple scroll of Instagram and gain advice/classes from experts in the field online. As I kick off my tenth year, I thought it would be fun to reflect back on my portrait photography. Many people may know my sports-action work from the start of my career, but since the beginning I have always enjoyed portraits, both studio and on-location.

These 34 images below represent some of my favorite portraits over the years, some date back from my first year at photography school all the way to 2018. There are stories behind each one, like when I scaled a 20ft ladder and was shooting down on Noah climbing a rope. I was not harnessed in at all and he must of climbed that rope 20 times to get the shot. But we got the shot and it’s still a favorite image. In 2016 one of my images landed on the cover of a magazine, which was one of those impossible bucket list items I thought about back in photography school. I had been working with a national magazine and luckily my friend was willing to pose for me in sub 30 degree weather, all while pretending it was spring to get the summer cover shot.

I’m excited for more creative assignments in 2019. I’m expanding by including more Personal Brand Photography work, blog post coming soon, as I love supporting entrepreneurs and capturing what and how they live their passion. Please contact me for your next photography project and follow along on my journey on any of these social media accounts

Behind the Scenes: FitMom Editorial Photo Shoots

Over the past few months I have been working with Holl and Lane Magazine on various projects.  One such project had me working with a mom of 3 under 3, yes you read that correctly.  We had numerous photo shoots to support future editorial articles for the magazine and this week on the blog I wanted to show behind the scene images of what it took to capture these images juggling kids and organizing each shot.  Each shoot had its own challenges, like weather and kids running in and out of the shoot.  We ended each shoot exhausted, but happy with the results.  A few of my favorite editorial shoots are shown below.  Check out issue 6 of Holl and Lane Magazine and see more from our collaboration.

New Year, New Website, New Images

I’ve had a busy start to the new year and am excited to launch my revamped website.  Not only is the website’s functionality and look improved, but I have added new content to the portfolio and assignment sections.  For the CrossFit fan, you will enjoy looking back to the 2010 Regional I covered in the rural part of Ohio before all the sponsorships, stadiums and ESPN coverage.

A View Through My Lens: 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games

The 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games did not disappoint!  This was my third trip to cover the annual Reebok CrossFit Games, but this year my focus was on Reebok sponsored athletes.  I was excited to not only capture the action of the events, but to highlight Reebok Athletes and specialized gear.  Reebok has developed various shoes, shirts, sports bras, shorts, gloves, weightlifting socks and compression gear.  All the gear can be found here, at the Reebok CrossFit Shop.

It wouldn’t be the Reebok CrossFit Games without the Canon 400m 2.8 lens, pictured below on my shoulder.  This lens is key to cover the track and soccer stadium action.  Of course it’s not the Games without the unveiling of new Rogue equipment. This year the crowd saw the Pig, Worm, A-frame Rig and the Burden log.  All of these new pieces made for some great photos as well.

So another CrossFit season is complete.  I wonder what 2014 will bring…..

On the Road Again: 2013 Reebok CrossFit Regionals

I hit the road again to cover the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Regional events.  This year I traveled to the North East Regional in Canton, Ma, which was located at Reebok Headquarters.  Next, I was off to the Navy Pier in Chicago, IL  for the North Central Regional and lastly Columbus, OH for the Central East Regional.  Every year the events get bigger and bigger, four years ago the crowds were in the hundreds and this year thousands came out to cheer on their fellow athletes.

Here are some behind the scenes images:
